Palm Leaf Manuscript Workshop with James Canary Thursday, December 6, 2017, 1-5pm Class of 1978 Orrery Pavilion, Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center, sixth floor University of Pennsylvania Libraries The Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to attend a hands-on Palm Leaf Manuscript Workshop led by James Canary, Head of Conservation at the University of Indiana’s Lilly Library. Mr Canary is an expert on South and Southeast Asian manuscript production and has traveled extensively in the Himalayan region researching Tibetan book craft as well as traditional Burmese text production. These include the preparation of inks, birch-bark and palm leaf writing surfaces, and decorative wooden covers. Participants will learn about and create their own palm leaf manuscript from start to finish using traditional techniques. A lecture on Buddhist palm leaf manuscripts by Justin McDaniel will kick off the workshop. There will be a viewing of Buddhist palm leaf manuscripts from Penn's collection of South and Southeast Asian manuscripts in the Lea Library and a tour of the exhibition Intertwined World'sby curator Benjamin J.
