CFA: 7th Advanced School in the Humanities, which will focus on Historical Formations of Spatial Knowledge (March 9–14, 2025, Israel Institute for Advanced Studies, Jerusalem)
This advanced school will explore the formation and exchange of spatial knowledge in a global context from approximately 1000 to 1900. Through interdisciplinary readings and site visits, participants will investigate the development of geographical concepts and their connection to political, social, and cultural contexts. The program will cover topics such as cosmographies, maps, city plans, travel narratives, and epics. Students will gain exposure to methodologies in spatial history and acquire knowledge beyond their immediate research topics.
Themes include:
- Spatiality, territoriality, and power
- Movement, travel, and description
- The transmission of geographical knowledge
- Cosmography as a genre and idea
- Maps as texts and objects
- Urbanism
- Digital methods in spatial research
The program will be guided by an international team of leading scholars, with Anthony Grafton (Princeton University) serving as the General Director, alongside organizers Zur Shalev (University of Haifa), Zef Segal (The College of Management Academic Studies), and Moshe Yagur (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem).
