In the first half of the twentieth century, Jews went from being almost completely excluded from all jobs in American publishing to being preeminent throughout the book business. Many of the most prestigious American publishing houses, such as Knopf, Simon & Schuster, and Random House, were founded by Jewish families and led by Jewish editors. How did the prominence of Jews in publishing influence the history of American literature, and how did it shape an American market for Jewish literature, including Yiddish literature in translation?
