In Black and White: Photographs of Black Theater by Alix Jeffry
At the height of the civil rights movement, New York Times photographer Alix Jeffry captured the premieres of two revolutionary plays by Amiri Baraka and Adrienne Kennedy. Drawing on Jeffry’s archive of over 60,000 images, "In Black and White" explores the intersection of the arts and activism at a pivotal moment in Black theater history. Portraits by Jeffry of pioneering Black artists of the 1960s and ‘70s—including Harry Belafonte, Morgan Freeman, and Leontyne Price—will also be on view on the ground floor of Houghton Library.
