INTRO TO BOOKBINDING: 3 BASIC STRUCTURES

Many more complex bookbinding structures can be built from a few basic constructions. In this class we’ll cover the one-sheet book, the accordion fold and the simple pamphlet. You’ll go home with at least 3 different book models, a lot of ideas for future projects and best of all—a solid foundation for coming into our open studios and making books of all kinds!
LETTERPRESS ORIENTATION

This one-session class is an orientation session for all newcomers to learn the basics of typesetting and press work. The session will begin with a brief discussion of the history and process of Letterpress Printing. After a tour of the workshop participants will learn to set type and print on a Vandercook cylinder press. Be sure to bring a proverb, brief quotation, or even a bit of writing made up on the spot to set your type to and print.
Emphasis will be placed on the proper techniques for setting metal hand type, press work, and the selection of appropriate type faces. No previous experience is required and all materials, tools and equipment are provided.

In this workshop we will make single signature, pamphlets with covered boards and possibly double signature pamphlets. Variations of the pamphlet binding, tool cleaning and brush cleaning will also be reviewed.
You have the option to stay until 8:00 to make a hard cover version of the pamphlet.

LETTERPRESS INTENSIVE: BILINGUAL POETRY
October 1 through November 19, 2017 -- 2:00 - 5:00 (Sundays)

The Letterpress Intensive workshop is offering an opportunity to explore letterpress typography by typesetting and printing poetry interlined with its translation in a second language and typeface. Students with an interest in Latin, Hebrew, or ancient Greek are especially encouraged to attend but no classic language knowledge or letterpress experience is required. Participants will learn about historic typefaces and how to hand set and print a short poem of one's choice using movable metal type. They will receive intensive hands-on instruction in the nuances of traditional fine book typography and printing. Examples of the project from earlier workshops are on display outside the Treasure Room in Baker Library.
An informational meeting open to all will be held Sunday, October 1, from 2 to 3 pm in Baker room 21. At the end of this introductory session, attendees can decide if they would like to register to participate in the workshop. Subsequent sessions will be held on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 pm through the term. Faculty and staff are welcome to attend with students given priority for registration which will be limited to six. All materials and equipment will be provided by the workshop. The equilateral triangle is a magical shape. Come and explore the nuances of how this triangle shape can be made into a fun and dynamic book. You will learn how to cut the triangles and then create an accordion style structure.

CLEMENTE OROZCO ’85 of Impronta Casa Editora at Dartmouth College and the Book Arts Workshop
October 16-20, 2017
Clemente Orozco ’85 is the director of Impronta Casa Editora, an independent book publisher and cultural venue in Guadalajara, Mexico, specializing in hand-printed books. A Dartmouth graduate of the Class of 1985, Orozco has had a long career as an artist, illustrator, printer, and book designer. He will be visiting for the week as he works with students in the Dartmouth curriculum. Join us as he gives a public lecture called Arts of the Book and Book Artists in Mexico: A Panoramic View in the Current Periodicals Room at Baker Library on Wednesday, October 18 from 4:00-5:00 with a reception to follow.
Also, stop by the Book Arts Workshop (in Baker Library, right around the corner from the Orozco murals) on Friday afternoon from 2:00-6:00 to see what Clemente is printing and have a conversation with him.
DRAGON SCALE BINDING

Come learn how to make this simple, yet dynamic book. Also called the Whirlwind binding, this scroll-like structure is based on ancient Chinese account books. It opens gracefully and can have a sculptural quality when stood on its edge.

"The Night Before Christmas"
A collaborative printing of this seasonal poem by Clement Moore will be held for two sessions. Each participant will compose in type, a section of the poem after which all the type will be assembled to print the poem in two colors. The design and type styles will be decided by the participants along with any ornamentation and/or initial letters.
Participants should take an orientation class before this class, if they have not already
done so.
