Description:

This seminar examines methods and debates in the study of material objects relevant to intellectual history and history of science. The first part is devoted to books, the second to scientific materials such as instruments and natural specimens, and the third to the institutions which have collected these sources—libraries, archives, and museums. Students will choose an object (book or scientific object) on which to focus their final research paper. While seminar readings will generally focus on early modern Europe, students are welcome to choose research topics from other times and/or places. Primarily for graduate students.
