SUMMARY:Calligrapher Margaret Shepherd on the making of Song of Songs (Ticknor Society)
DESCRIPTION:<!--break-->Margaret Shepherd will talk about the designs for her book Song of Songs, the Bible's Great Love Poems in Calligraphy, recently published by Paraclete Press. The original art, 45 pages of tabloid size, combines a wide range of techniques–watercolor, gouache, enamel, spray gold, embossing–with the familiar letterforms of pen calligraphy. Her work focuses mainly on letters, rather than decoration. Ms. Shepherd will cover issues of legibility, permanence, history, printing, and translation that are common to calligraphers and book artists. Ten of the original calligraphy were included in a recent group exhibition at Bromer Gallery in Boston, and the whole collection will be shown at Yale Divinity School next Spring.
