In 2014, Werner L. Gundersheimer, director emeritus of the Folger Shakespeare Library, donated his collection of nearly 600 Italian travel books to the Mortimer Rare Book Room at Smith College. Fifty of these books and manuscripts, dating from the 18th to the 20th century, are currently on display in the Book Arts Gallery (Neilson Library, third floor) through December 20, 2016. Also on view are several maps of Italy from the rare book collection at Smith.

Dr. Gundersheimer will present an illustrated talk, "Italia Mia: How English and American Travelers Made Italy Their Own," on Thursday, October 6, at 4:30 p.m. in the Neilson Library Browsing Room. This talk is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Smith College Libraries and the Mortimer Rare Book Room and will be followed by a reception in the Book Arts Gallery.
