Oral history is a term used to describe recorded interviews with first hand witnesses to past events. Typically conducted by an informed interviewer, oral history can produce a number of different outcomes useful for public history, museums, research, genealogy, and more. Over the course of the this workshop, the presenters will define oral history, describe several different approaches to oral history interviewing, and help participants consider how best to ethically preserve and document their own interviews. Participants will discuss and practice interview techniques, recording technologies, and oral history ethics. Christian Appy (Professor of History, UMass Amherst) will deliver a keynote address, based on his award-winning work using oral histories to examine the Vietnam War. This workshop is open to the public and anyone interested in recording first-hand accounts of past events. It is aimed at beginners and those planning new oral history projects. Past participants have included university faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, museum and library professionals, writers, volunteers, teachers, genealogists, and a host of other individuals. Come learn valuable oral history skills with other members of the community and trained oral historians from UMass Oral History Lab! Lunch and a light breakfast is included. Redman, Assistant Professor, UMass Amherst History Department Shakti Castro, MA Student and Public History Assistant, UMass Amherst History Department Jason Higgins, PhD Student, UMass Amherst History Department Keynote Speaker Christian Appy is Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the author of three books about the American War in Vietnam: American Reckoning: The Vietnam War and Our National Identity (Viking, 2015); Patriots: The Vietnam War Remembered From All Sides (Viking, 2003), and Working-Class War: American Combat Soldiers and Vietnam (University of North Carolina Press, 1993). Appy is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Massachusetts Book Award for Non-Fiction, the University of Massachusetts Distinguished Teaching Award, and the UMass Amherst Chancellor's Medal.
