**Daniel Smail** This section offers new History concentrators an overview of the history and anthropology of material culture. Our coverage will range widely across both time and space; major themes will include things created in the deep human past as well as the habits of consumption and even addiction that define our relationship with things in the present day. Do we own things? Or do things own us? Does having more stuff necessarily lead to happiness? Readings will offer students a chance to work not just with history and historical sources, but also art history, literary studies, archaeology, environmental history, and cognitive neuroscience.
