46. Sketch for Piano Concerto with Selected Orchestra

Composing in the 1980s

Lou Harrison

New York, NY, 1985 (ca.)

The collection from which this sketch is drawn contains working drafts, sketches, and fragments of several musical compositions of American composer Lou Harrison (1917-2003). This particular sketch illustrates the working out of musical ideas for Harrison’s Piano Concerto with Selected Orchestra, a work he began in 1983 and completed in 1985. The Concerto was premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1985 with Keith Jarrett as soloist, with the American Composers Orchestra and Dennis Russell Davies, conductor. Harrison was particularly recognized for his percussion music, his exploration of cross-cultural compositional techniques, his fascination with and employment of just intonation tuning systems, and his synthesis of Asian and Western musics.
