Professor of English literature George Lyman Kittredge (Harvard, A.B., 1882) taught at Harvard from 1888 to 1936. A medievalist, he wrote on Chaucer, Shakespeare, grammar, and witchcraft, and edited Anglo-Saxon, Middle English, and Scottish poetry and ballads.
This volume from Kittredge’s undergraduate years at Harvard contains transcribed literary and biblical passages, poetry, and newspaper items, as well as a collection of old English oaths and reading lists. Some items are written in Greek and Latin. The volume includes an index at the front. Marginal notes suggest that Kittredge re-read his notes on one or more later occasions.

Professor of English Lit., Kittredge's Notes
Harvard University's George Lyman Kittredge's notes demonstrate studious, importantly observational, well structured, academic examining breakdowns of literature. His notes from Harvard University that dated somewhere between the years 1878 and 1880 support Kittredge's intelligent opinions, and suggest how he would have liked his note taking to be noticed, to be read and respected, as well as taken seriously. The seriousness of George Lymnan Kittredge's note taking is in his personal interpretation of English, Greek, and Latin literature and how it was an unfailing part of educating students at Harvard.
