Passing the censor
Valladolid, Spain,
1549
This edition of Guevara’s Familiar Epistles, a collection of letters dealing with religious, historical and social topics, received the usual royal license when it was published in 1549, as was to be expected, since Guevara was preacher to their Catholic Majesties, Ferdinand and Isabella, as well as a bishop of the Church, but at the foot of the title-page of this copy of the tenth edition of this popular book there is also a handwritten note by the censor, Fray Gonzalo, dated April 24, 1585 (almost forty years after its publication) permitting its inclusion in the monastic library at Aranda.
